How do you know when the water has run dry?
The unit will stop steaming. There is a safety valve fitted in the unit which automatically turns the boiler off when the runs dry.

Yes. Spot removal on carpets and upholstery can be performed with brush attachments.
Can you control the steam output or does it have to be continous steam?
Yes. You can determine the steam output by the amount the button is depressed. Press fully for a full burst of steam, and hold for continuous steam.
Can you use kettle descaler to descale the Handheld Steam Cleaner?
Yes. It is advisable to regulary descale the Handheld Steam Cleaner if you live in a hard water area and yes you can use kettle descaler.
